Bluebird Box

Nest house

$ 30

Ideal bird house for nesting Tree Swallows and Eastern Bluebirds

To attract these birds:

  • Mount the nest box on a post or pole 5 to 6 feet from the ground
  • Install a predator guard on the post (wrapping in metal stove pipe or metal flashing are easy options)
  • Position near open fields, marshes, meadows, wooded swamps, or yards with mature trees and shrubs
  • Place the nest box far enough from trees and shrubs so squirrels cannot jump onto the box (6-8 ft), but close enough to provide a landing spot for young birds when first leaving the nest (10-50 ft)

Less common users of this nest box include Chickadees and Nuthatches

To attract these birds:

  • Mount on post, pole or in a tree 5 to 15 feet from the ground
  • Place approximately 1 inch of untreated wood shavings (not saw dust) in bottom of box
  • Position near forest edges, meadows or in a yard with mature hardwood trees
  • For best results
    • Point the opening of the nest box away from prevailing winds
    • Do not paint or water-seal the inside or outside of the wood, toxic fumes will be given off that are harmful to birds
    • Clean out the nest box each year once you are sure the young have left
